MLM in India - why is it so popular and controversial there?

Network marketing has exploded in India, with companies like Amway India, Vestige, and Modicare becoming massive. The appeal makes sense - low startup costs, flexible hours, and income potential in a country where traditional jobs can be hard to find. But India has also seen numerous MLM scams and Ponzi schemes disguised as direct selling companies. The Indian government has tried to regulate the industry but enforcement is weak. If you are in India, what has been your experience with network marketing?

My biggest piece of advice - never recruit someone who cannot afford to lose their investment. If a person is living paycheck to paycheck, you are potentially putting them in a worse financial position. Be ethical about who you bring into the business.

You nailed it. I spent 2 years in network marketing and the only thing I gained was a garage full of unsold product and a smaller bank account. But I did learn valuable sales skills that I now use in a real job.
