Content marketing vs direct messaging for MLM

I see two schools of thought - some say create content and let people come to you, others say direct messaging is the way to go. Which approach works better in your experience?

If you are going to do MLM, track EVERY expense from day one. Most people have no idea how much they are actually spending versus earning. Create a spreadsheet with every product purchase, sample, event ticket, gas, and tool subscription. The numbers will tell you the truth.

My story is different. I joined an MLM at 23 with no business experience. Failed miserably for the first year. Almost quit 5 times. But I stuck with it and now 4 years later I earn more than I did at my corporate job. The difference was finding a mentor who actually cared about my success, not just their commission.
