I created a spreadsheet to track every dollar going in and out of my MLM business and I encourage everyone to do the same. Most people only look at their commission check and feel good. But when you add up products purchased, autoship, event tickets, travel, samples, tools, and subscriptions, the picture changes dramatically. I was shocked to discover I was actually losing money in months where I thought I was profitable. If you are in MLM, please track everything. The numbers do not lie.
Your story mirrors mine almost exactly. I want you to know that it gets better. I left my MLM 2 years ago and it took about 6 months to stop feeling embarrassed. Now I can talk about it openly and even laugh about some of the ridiculous things I did. Healing takes time but it happens.
If you are going to do MLM, track EVERY expense from day one. Most people have no idea how much they are actually spending versus earning. Create a spreadsheet with every product purchase, sample, event ticket, gas, and tool subscription. The numbers will tell you the truth.
Let us look at this objectively. The Direct Selling Association reports $40 billion in annual US sales. That is real revenue from real products. The industry employs millions of people. To dismiss the entire model as a scam is intellectually dishonest. The problem is not the model - it is how some companies and distributors abuse it.

This is really helpful. Do you have a link to the income disclosure statement you mentioned? I have been trying to find it for my company but they make it surprisingly hard to locate.
I respectfully disagree with some of your points. Yes, most people do not make money, but that is true of any business. The SBA says 50% of traditional businesses fail within 5 years. At least with MLM the startup cost is low so the financial risk is minimal.
