I lost $12,000 in an MLM - here is my story and what I learned

I want to share my experience because I think it could help someone. I joined a health and wellness MLM 3 years ago. My upline told me I could replace my full-time income within 6 months. I was motivated and did everything they told me - bought the starter kit ($499), attended every conference ($1,200 in travel and tickets), maintained my monthly autoship ($150/month), bought "business building" tools ($50/month), and even rented a space for product parties. After 18 months, I had spent over $12,000 and earned back about $800 in commissions. The worst part was losing friends who felt I was constantly trying to sell to them. I am not bitter anymore, but I want people to go in with realistic expectations.

If you are going to do MLM, track EVERY expense from day one. Most people have no idea how much they are actually spending versus earning. Create a spreadsheet with every product purchase, sample, event ticket, gas, and tool subscription. The numbers will tell you the truth.

Your story mirrors mine almost exactly. I want you to know that it gets better. I left my MLM 2 years ago and it took about 6 months to stop feeling embarrassed. Now I can talk about it openly and even laugh about some of the ridiculous things I did. Healing takes time but it happens.

Stop using scripts and copy-paste messages. People can spot MLM messaging from a mile away in 2026. Instead, just be genuine. Share your honest experience with the products. If people are interested, they will ask. If they are not, move on without being pushy.

Here is my advice for anyone considering MLM: Do not join if you need money now. MLM is a long-term play that might never pay off. Only join if you genuinely love the products and can afford the monthly cost as a consumer. Treat any income as a bonus, not an expectation.
